Steve Weiss was the founder of MuteSix, an agency that specialized in paid ads and performance creative on Facebook. It was named Inc. 5000 Fastest Growing Company twice.
Weiss’s journey to becoming a successful entrepreneur is both unique and inspiring.
Weiss moved to Los Angeles in late 2012, with hopes of somehow breaking into stand up comedy and acting. Weiss’s stepdad, who was one of the greatest inspirations in his life, passed away suddenly in Hurricane Sandy, but always inspired him to chase his dreams, even in the face of long odds.
When Weiss got to LA, he stayed on friends’ couches and did everything humanly possible to network in the comedy space and get stage time. To do this, Weiss needed to bring people to his show, but didn’t know anyone in LA and struggled to build a following. While sitting in Starbucks, he came up with the idea to run ads on Facebook to drive people to his comedy shows. This specific act worked incredibly well, and as it turned out he was a much better marketer than comedian.
MuteSix was born out of running ads for comedy shows in the back of a Starbucks off Hollywood Boulevard. In its infancy, it was a one-person company that survived on lattes and dollar-menu dinners from In-N-Out Burger.
Through a combination of luck and hard work, the company eventually grew to over 450 employees. Weiss led MuteSix’s growth by focusing on performance creative solutions for clients, and building incentive structures for team members that aligned closely with the growth of the company. MuteSix’s client list included startups, blue chips, and challenger brands across B2B and B2C industries.
The company originally built in the back of a Starbucks editing creative and running ads was acquired in 2019, a lucrative nine-figure exit. Weiss formally exited the business in 2022.
The story of MuteSix and Weiss centers on themes of compassion, focus, and fearlessness. Weiss stresses that an underrated key to success is simply showing up, and then doing the hard work to follow our dreams. The book will be released in the summer of 2024.
Weiss lives in Los Angeles with his wife Gavi and daughter Lottie.
